These are web site design tips that are relevant to all web sites:
- Your online and offline corporate image should be consistent
- Your site should be easy to read
- Your site should be easy to navigate
- Your web pages should have a consitent layout
- Your web pages should be no larger than 100k
The tone of your text and the design of your graphics will convey your intended image. Keep your online image consistent with your offline image. Be consistent with the use of logo, corporate colors, and any other marketing collateral associated with yor company.
Choose your background colors for links whenever possible. Blue text usually indicates an unvisited link. Purple, marron, or darker blue usually represent a followed link, and red is the color of an active link. Ease of navigation is very important to your site. Provide a navigation bar on every page that links to all of the major pages of your site.
Make it easy to get from one page to any other. Never have a dead ends where viewers scroll down a page or two of information only to find that they must scroll all the way back up to the top to move on (because you have no links at the bottom of the page). Also avoid dead links. Verify periodically that all your links are still active. Your visitors should be able to get anywhere they want to go on your site in three clicks or less.
Keep the design of your site consistent. Font types, headers, footers, navigational bar, buttons, bullets, colors, etc. should be consistent throughout the site to maintain a polished professional look.
Your home page should be 50k or less, and your home page should be displayed on one or two page screens. Studies have shown that visitors will rarely wait beyond 15 seconds to download a site.
